Basket Weaving Workshop with Alexa Rivera

  • Kents’ Corner State Historic Site 7 Old W Church Road Calais, VT, 05640 United States (map)

Explore the basket not only as a functional vessel, but as a sacred container for stories, keepsakes and remembrance. Participants will learn foundational basketry techniques, while examining what we carry, and the ways in which the physical basket and the act of weaving are holders—of object and tradition. All participants will make and leave with a finished basket, and skills to make more in the future.

No experience necessary. All materials provided. Please reach out to Alexa for permission for weavers under 18 years old.

Participants are encouraged to bring something personal to weave into their basket, such as a scrap of fabric from a loved ones old clothing, a length of ribbon from a special occasion, a strip of old sheet music or letter, a shoelace from a memorable hike or journey, a snippet of a map from a special place, a strand of embroidery floss in a meaningful color, a vine from your favorite tree—and on and on—the possibilities are endless.
